Buck Curran in Sheffield

Buck Curran
Bishops House, Sheffield
Saturday 18th May 2024

We are big fans of Steffen Basho-Junghans here so are thrilled to welcome Buck Curran and Nick Jonah Davis in tribute to the guitar legend.

Steffen Basho-Junghans passed away at the end of 2022 leaving behind him an artistic impression on the cultural landscape and legacy. Steffen was a true artist in that his philosophy and way of being had a consistency from the way he approached his improvised paintings and water colours to his approach to the steel string guitar. He would always live in the moment and although composed pieces for the guitar preferred the ‘instant composition’ approach where pieces would vary from performance to performance. This evening is an opportunity to mark his passing and celebrate his legacy.

Buck Curran is an American singer-songwriter-guitarist, record producer, painter and guitar maker. As half of the duo Arborea, he has released 5 fine albums of psych folk, and has curated two tribute albums to guitar maestros Robbie Basho as well as a more recent tribute to Jack Rose. Curran's acoustic and electric guitar playing is characterized by the extensive use of low alternate tunings, slide, Ebow, reverb, manipulating string overtones and dynamics creating haunting voice-like timbres on the instrument.

Nick Jonah Davis is a British solo instrumental guitarist and composer drawing primarily on British and American folk traditions. His most recent full-length release, ‘When the Sun Came’, was featured as one of 12 ‘Best of British’ guitar records in Guitarist Magazine, with a 5-page feature on Nick in the same edition. It was also one of Folk Radio’s ‘Best Albums of 2020’.

Doors are 7pm with music starting at 7.45pm. We recommend getting to the venue in advance of 7:45pm as the space is intimate and manoeuvring around can be difficult once the gig starts. You are welcome to bring your own liquid refreshment as we do not have a bar.
